What is a dental emergency, and how can we help?

A dental emergency is an issue that requires immediate attention from a dentist regarding your teeth, gums, surrounding tissues, or other oral structures. The most common symptom that prompts patients to seek urgent care is sudden or severe pain, but it is not the only reason.

Call Dworkin Dentist immediately if you wear any dental appliances such as dentures or bridges that suddenly become painful to wear or break. You also need to be seen urgently if you have any implants that become loose, break, or come out. We will work with you to schedule an urgent appointment to correct this issue before more damage occurs.

Broken/Chipped Tooth

A broken or chipped tooth is another dental emergency that can happen from taking a bite of something too hard or from an impact to the mouth, such as the type frequently resulting from playing sports. No matter how the tooth becomes damaged, it is critical that you are seen right away by the dentist for the best hope of saving the tooth. Call Dworken Dental immediately to let us know what has happened so we can schedule an urgent dental appointment ASAP. If an adult tooth is knocked out, getting it placed back into its socket is very time-sensitive. You may rinse it briefly in tap water and gently put it back into the socket if it is visibly soiled. Never scrub the tooth or touch the root area. You may also place the tooth in your mouth next to your cheek to keep it moist while on your way to the dentist. It is vital that you then proceed to your urgent dental appointment. If you can not get it into the socket, place the tooth in a cup of milk or wrap it in a clean, damp towel to transport it to the dentist. Never store the tooth in plain tap water. Timely treatment may save the tooth. If a baby tooth has been knocked out, do not try to place it back into the socket; take the tooth with you to the dentist so they can examine the surrounding teeth for any additional damage.

Infections

One of the most serious dental emergencies is an infection which can develop into an abscess. An abscess is a pocket of pus caused by bacteria below the gum’s surface or in the tooth. Signs of infection that may indicate an abscess are definitely something you want to get evaluated and treated right away.

Some of the signs of an oral infection are severe and throbbing tooth pain that may radiate to the jaw, ear, or neck. Sensitivity to biting or chewing, or to hot or cold temperatures, swelling in cheeks or face, or swelling of lymph nodes in the neck or under your jaw, as well as a fever, are also signs of infection. A sudden rush of salty, foul-tasting and smelling fluid in your mouth may indicate an abscess has ruptured. If not addressed promptly, oral infections can worsen quickly and become more significant problems. If your dentist is not available, a trip to the urgent medical care or emergency room is in order for these symptoms. A medical doctor can start antibiotics immediately to prevent the infection from spreading and worsening until the dentist sees you.
