How long have implants been in use?

Dental implants have been successfully used in modern dentistry since 1965. Prior attempts at dental implants failed due to the body rejecting the materials available at that time. It wasn’t until titanium was discovered to be biocompatible by integrating with the bone in the jaw that implants became a viable option for tooth replacement.

How implants work?

A titanium post is placed in the area where the removed tooth’s roots were, in effect replacing the root. Over time, the bone will fuse with the titanium post. Fusion with the jaw bone, known as osseointegration, is significant because this provides stability to the implant and the surrounding natural teeth. One of the huge disadvantages of traditional dentures is that the jaw bone can deteriorate over time with no tooth to support it. In some cases, the loss of bone is so significant that bone grafts are required to rebuild the jaw bone. Implants preserve the bone in the area of the replaced teeth and protect your facial structure. Implants also prevent unwanted movement of surrounding natural teeth.

The implant base is made of titanium and is the portion that replaces the tooth root. The top of the implant is a crown made out of porcelain to give it that natural tooth look. The dentist surgically places the base, and after a period of healing, the crown is installed.

What can implants do for me?

Dental Implants can be the solution for replacing a single tooth or several. There is no need to drill or remove healthy neighboring teeth when implants are placed; they are permanently attached and secure for a lifetime. For patients requiring full dentures, implants can be used as a permanent, more realistic alternative to replace natural teeth.

You care for Dental Implants just like natural teeth; brush them twice a day with a soft-bristle toothbrush, floss daily, and keep routine dentist appointments to keep your gums and remaining teeth healthy.

Because the implants are secure, you can continue to enjoy all your favorite foods. Some foods are off-limits or too risky to attempt to eat with dentures or bridges for fear of dental slippage. Not true with implants, you can continue to enjoy all your favorite foods. Simply put, Dental Implants are the next best thing to natural teeth. Dental Implants allow you to smile, talk, laugh, and eat the same way you would with natural teeth.

Why you should get one?

Implants are incredibly durable, and many people have had implants in place for 40-plus years. With a success rate of 98%, the chances are excellent that Dental Implants are the solution to your tooth replacement needs.
